1940s Blonde Oak Dining Kitchen Table Set with Hand-Painted Details and Carved Chairs – All Original, Rare Survivor, Stored in finished basement since the 1970s
Introducing a true vintage treasure: this 1940s blonde oak dining table set, a rare survivor that has been preserved with care and remains in all-original condition. This set was purchased in Detroit, Michigan, and has been a cherished family heirloom, used only in a spare kitchen and always covered with a tablecloth when in use. As a result, it has been shielded from daily wear, making it a unique piece that has weathered the years with grace.
This set captures the essence of post-WWII craftsmanship and mid-century design. Whether you’re a collector looking to restore a piece of history or someone seeking a distinctive retro piece for your home, this dining set offers both charm and character.
Table Details:
• Era: Believed to be from the 1940s, embodying the classic mid-century blend of blonde oak finishes and hand-painted details that were all the rage in the post-WWII era.
• Materials: Solid oak construction, with a light blonde wood finish that has aged beautifully, developing a warm ambered patina over the years.
• Dimensions: Measures 48” long by 34” wide without the leaf and extends to 60” with the original leaf, perfect for hosting family dinners or retro-style gatherings.
• Decorative Features: The table boasts hand-painted stencil work on the surface, an artistic touch that was a hallmark of the time and adds an authentic vintage flair.
• Condition: This table has been stored in a conditioned environment all its years and unused in a spare kitchen since the 1970s, always covered with a tablecloth when in use. It was only ever in two homes. While the table has some deterioration on the surface finish, it still retains much of its charm. The leaf shows an imprint from the newspaper it was wrapped in. I have not attempted to wash the leaf surface to reveal the condition of the leaf. I don’t believe the leaf was used. See the photo that shows the table without the leaf. What character and history of this piece. The natural aging of the finish reflects the passage of time but speaks to its well-loved past.
Chair Details:
• The set includes four original carved chairs, each featuring curved backs with intricate carvings that reflect the Art Deco and mid-century influences of the time.
• The original red cushions remain intact, showing signs of wear but contributing to the retro appeal of the set.
Historical Context: This set encapsulates the optimism of the post-war 1940s, when blonde oak finishes became highly fashionable in American homes. After the hardship of World War II, families embraced light, airy designs that symbolized new beginnings. The hand-painted accents and carved chair details speak to the craftsmanship of the era and make this set a wonderful example of vintage design.
Condition: This kitchen dining set is a rare survivor from the 1940s, showing gentle signs of aging that only add to its vintage appeal. The table top and leaf show signs of wear from being stored separately and unused for decades. There is noticeable deterioration of the original finish on the tabletop, but this only adds to its authenticity and charm. The chairs and the rest of the set remain solid, sturdy, and functional.
Why This Set Stands Out:
• A Rare Survivor: This set has been carefully preserved and is completely original, with no refinishing or modifications. It has been shielded from excessive wear due to being used in a spare kitchen and always covered with a tablecloth.
