We will have 2 litters of purebred, registered Idaho Pasture piglets born in August and ready for pick up in early October. Pigs are social animals and cannot thrive alone, so you must purchase at least 2, or have other pigs. :)
Our litters sell out quickly - please reserve early if you are considering purchasing some.
We have feeder piglets (barrows - castrated males) for $150, and the best piglets will be selected to be registered breeding stock and sold for $450. Registered unrelated breeding pairs are available for $900.
Most people think of raising pigs in the spring, but we highly recommend raising pigs in the fall. Since this is largely grass fed pork, IPP's take 10-12 months to reach market weight (250lbs). Getting piglets in the fall means they are small through the winter when you have to pay to feed them hay, and large in the spring and summer when they can fatten up on pasture for free.
About Idaho Pasture Pigs (IPPs), an excellent breed for small homesteads:
They are grazers and very economical to raise as they eat grass/hay for 95% of their diet, in addition to 1-4 pounds of grain/mineral mix per pig/day.
Bred for short, upturned noses, they are much easier on your land, pastures, and fences than other pigs.
They are extremely gentle, smart and friendly and are great with kids.
Since they are grass fed and on pasture there is no smell, even on our farm with 20+ pigs.
No barn needed - they live outside in Michigan year round in small A-frame huts stuffed with straw.
They are very smart and are already trained to stay in solar electric net fencing.
We love to help families get started with new areas of farming/homesteading! You are welcome to come out to our farm in Chelsea to learn what you need to get started.
