So you're thinking of raising chickens. Buying the chickens and all of the supplies to keep them is the hardest part. You start out buying a "do it yourself" chicken coop for $300.00 at your local farm store and buy a half a dozen chicks for $5.00 each. Then you buy the feeder, waterer, a heat lamp, grit, feed, and raise them in your basement until the weather gets warmer and they start to mature (and don't look quite as cute). In about 5 months they start laying eggs and that's the best part! Chickens are generally easy to raise when you have the correct setup and get to that point. That little hen house with the coop (wired in area) works great for chicks. The problem is, they have to get big before they start laying eggs. Then you find out that with approximately 1.5 square ft per chick, the starter coop isn't big enough! You are going to need more room in the coop. They are easy to raise if you have a larger coop to go with the hen house so I built a chicken tractor. A chicken coop on wheels that can be moved around easily at the additional cost of $500.00. With this setup I had 8 chicken and after 5 months was getting an average of 7 + eggs per day. Then came the news that I would have to travel more for work. I found out you have to be there to Feed the chickens and collect the eggs once a day! I adopted out those 8 chickens I spent a year raising. Now I need to sell everything that you need to start your own chicken operation, including cold weather chicken supplies. Start your own egg operation for $300.00. Less than half the cost for me to purchase and build the 5'X7' coop alone. And you get that original hen house along with everything you need minus the chickens for $250.00.
