From the looks of it, this photo was probably taken in the 1930s, and probably at Madison Square Garden. It features the greatest boxing legends up until that time.
Back then, a company got the rights to the original photo, blew it up, and created a “key” to identify the 17 boxers and one referee pictured. Then the photo was affixed to a heavy duty cardboard backing and sold as a collector’s item. I’ve never seen this photo online.
The poster measures 19 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches.
What is so neat about this poster is that it identifies the 17 boxers and one ref.
Obviously, the big names stand out—Jonhson, Braddock, Sharkey, Tunney, Dempsey, Baer, and Schmelling—but the other guys were really good, even referee Art Donavan. Wonder what Johnson and Braddock were talking about?
For any classic boxing fan, this photo/poster would be an excellent addition to a collection.
