Asmus Brothers opened up their store on Griswold St. in Detroit in the late 1800s. The business specialized in teas, coffee, and spices. They weren’t open long. The brothers got into other business ventures in the Detroit area.
The bin is made of metal and is quite large, 17 inches high at its tallest point and slants down to 14 inches high. It’s 18 inches wide and 14 inches deep. The two sides and back have some paint loss, but most of the bin has retained its original green paint from over a hundred years ago. Almost all of the original gold script remains as well. The top slants downward with a metal handle/opener to pour in large quantities of coffee. The bottom has been covered in some kind of wood, probably to keep the coffee fresher or more “uniform.”
On the slanted top in original gold lettering is written “Asmus Bros. Detroit, Mich” while the front has Fresh Roasted Coffee Always Uniform.”
I’ve only seen two Asmus Brothers small tins for sale online—one for pure ground savory and another for celery seed— but this large coffee bin might be one of a kind or—at best—one of a few in existence.
