In 1906, Italian immigrant Amedeo Obici started the Planters Peanut Company in Wilkes-Barre, PA, and later moved the company to Suffolk, VA, in 1913.
Obici had the ingenious idea of using peanuts, which had previously been used as animal feed in the 1899s, and converting them to a human snack food through roasting and salting.
In 1916, a schoolboy won a contest to draw a company logo, which was called “Mr. Peanut.” Mr. Peanut’s monocle, top hat, and cane were added in the 1930s.
This burlap advertising sack is probably from the 1940s, possibly early 1950s. It held 1 1/2 pounds of roasted, salted peanuts in the shell.
The burlap sack has the classic Mr. Peanut logo and measures 8 x 15 inches.
As you can see from the photos, the advertising sack is in great shape and would be perfect for framing.
