The National Biscuit Co. started in 1898 when two companies merged: the New York Biscuit Co. and the American Biscuit Co.
The new company used the “N” from “New York”, the “A” from “American”, “bis” for “biscuit”, and “co” for company—and NABISCO officially began.
The new company’s biggest early product was Animal Crackers in 1902, followed by Oreos in 1912.
This particular wooden shipping crate is probably from the early to mid-teens of 1910. On the front is the National Biscuit Company logo in front of what looks like stalks of wheat. The shipping label says “Honey Cakes” and something else I can’t make out, with a “K.” Since graham crackers didn’t come out until 1925, this crate pre-dates that.
The back of the crate has parts of the original hinges .
The crate is a great size for display: 21 1/2 inches long; 13 3/4 inches wide; and 9 1/2 inches deep.
As you can see from the photos, it’s in very good shape for being over a 100 years old.
