Cartoonist Ham Fisher created the fictional character Joe Palooka in 1930 and used him in a cartoon strip. It became so popular that, at one time, over 900 newspapers carried the strip.
In 1952, The Ideal Toy Co. got the idea to use the Palooka character to promote some of its boxing-related toys.
The company created a promotional booklet for kids and how to develop good self-defense skills. The cover features Joe Palooka, with his determined tongue sticking out,.
The inside cover has a message to kids from Joe Palooka on the importance of being in shape and defending oneself in “these troubled times”. (Korean War).
The informational booklet included categories such as Defense, Training, Exercises, The Punching Bag, (sold by the company), The Jab, The Hook, The Uppercut, and Diet.
The back cover has an advertisement for Ideal’s “Joe Palooka Pop Bag” made with “tough vinylite.”
The booklet is 8 pages long and measures 5 1/2 x 9 inches. It has some old folds from some kid carrying it around in his pocket, bit it’s in decent shape for being nearly 75 years old.
