This old tapestry advertises a business that no longer exists on W 8 Mile Rd. back in the day. It’s highly detailed and looks like it was almost hand-painted. It probably was designed to be displayed at the restaurant or at the homes of valued customers, with the original hanging string still attached.
Base on the Zone # (19) in the address, the advertising tapestry was most likely used in the 1950s.
The tapestry measures 14 1/2 inches tall and 8 inches wide. It looks like it is composed of many wooden sticks (bamboo?) that are slatted to easily fold into one another.
All of the colors and details are bold as they were 60-70 years ago. Luckily, the previous owner kept this piece stored and out of the sunlight.
Displayed, the tapestry would be a neat example of artistic advertising pieces in Detroit business history
