This booklet, 48 pages long, was designed as a New Testament reference supplement for German speaking children in the mid 1800s.
The front cover translates to “Biblical Little Book for Children.” It was published and sold by a bookseller in Reading, PA, in 1859, to distribute to the many children of German immigrant families that wee coming to America in the 19th Century.
On the back of the front page is the inscription “Cornelius S. Siegel 1861.”
The format is to provide children with New Testament references such as “In the Temple,” “With pain,” “What did He say to them?”
What’s so remarkable about this booklet is its condition. Aside from some minor spotting on the cover and the first few pages, overall the pages are very clean, easy to read, (in antique German script though). The binding is tight and all 48 pages and the cover are secure.
It’s in really good shape for being over 165 years old and I’m guessing that few—if any—of these booklets exist, and certainly not in this great shape,
