This original photo is really interesting. It shows a fancy dressed boy posing next to a dog. The photo is on heavier, sturdy cardboard with very fancy edges, something that was used in the later 1800s.
What’s even more interesting, though, is the dog. It sort of looked like a pug, but not quite. That’s because it’s how pugs looked like 140 years ago. Way back then, they had sleeker bodies, longer legs, and a longer snout. Sometimes their ears were clipped. The dog is this photo fits that description. Selective breeding (and maybe some inbreeding) transformed the early pug into what we know today.
The phot measures 4 3/8 x 3 3/38 inches and is in remarkable shape, as you can see from the photos.
