Make an Exchange Student a Part of Your Family! (Ann Arbor)

We are currently seeking loving host families for high school exchange students arriving in August 2010 for the 2010-2011 school year. We have full year and one semester students available. We have students available for placement in both public and private schools. Our kids come from all over the world: Germany, Finland, Turkey, Montenegro, England, Thailand, China, etc.

Host families are expected to provide these kids with their own bed and meals. Students may share a room with a host sibling of the same sex as long as they have their own bed. Students arrive with their own spending money and are expected to pay for their own expenses such as school supplies, clothing, school lunches, eating out, etc. Many prospective host families rule themselves out because they're not the "typical American family". There is no such thing! If you are willing to open your heart and home to one of these kids, and you're over the age of 25, you qualify to apply: singles, retirees, empty nesters, families with young children, same sex couples, disabled people, etc.

Hosting a student often leads to life-long connections. These kids truly become one of your own as a member of your family.

international Experience - USA (iE) is a small, CSIET listed, non-profit exchange program. We take great pride in our program and it shows in our kids. We offer our kids and host families an excellent support network. Please contact me today; I will happily tell you about our program and answer any questions you may have. You can fill an application online (www.ie-usa.com) if you would like to start the process. The application process is a slight hassle, but once you're approved as a host family, you can view all available students. At no time is there any kind of obligation. This is strictly voluntary.

Host families qualify for a $50 per month tax deduction.

Thanks!

If you are looking for a great service project to do with kids, consider making a blanket for Project Linus. We are a non-profit organization that provides love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.” We have already had many local youth organizations and schools make blankets for the Washtenaw County Chapter. As the holidays approach many people are looking for ways to get kids involved with service...this is one option you can consider. Please visit www.projectlinus.org or http://a2projectlinus.blogspot.com/ for more information.
Many thanks!!!

Volunteers needed for Peripheral Artery Disease Study (Ypsilanti, MI)

There is a new clinical research that may be of interest to you. The study is for men and women who have Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). PAD is also known as “hardening of the arteries”. In PAD, the inside of the blood vessel becomes narrow and blood flow is reduced. PAD affects about 12 million people in the US. It can lead to serious health problems such as stroke, heart attack, or amputation. Early symptoms of PAD may include cramping, or pain in the legs and heavy or tired legs while exercising or at rest. Only about one third of all people with PAD feel pain. Most people with PAD have no symptoms at all.

Stents are commonly used in blood vessels to improve blood flow. DURABILITY II is a research study that will test the safety and use of a particular stent called the PROTÉGÉâ EverFlexä Stent System (EverFlex Stent) to improve blood flow in the leg and foot compared to balloon angioplasty. All patients who meet the study criteria and who provide informed consent will undergo angioplasty followed by stenting using the EverFlex stent. You will be asked to return for a visit at 30 days, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years and 3 years.

This study may be right for you if you:
· Are an adult with narrowing in a major leg artery
· Are able to attend clinic visits in your area
· Meet other study criteria

HOST FAMILY/FAMILIES NEEDED FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (ALL AREAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

HOST FAMILY/FAMILIES NEEDED FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Council on International Educational Exchange is looking for host families to open their hearts and homes to welcome an international exchange student into their community for an academic school year or one semester. Our students hail from all over the globe and are eager to learn about the United States and become a member of an American family, community, and school.

The program provides an opportunity for host families to form lifelong relationships and unforgettable memories. Over 1300 CIEE high-school students arrive in the United States each year. Students live with host families, attend high school, and become true members of their new families and communities. Hosting a CIEE student is the perfect opportunity for communities to meet an "ambassador" of an overseas country and to develop skills as an ambassador of the USA.

Students participating in the exchange are between 15-18 years old, have studied English for a minimum of three years, have their own medical insurance and spending money, and have undergone a thorough personal screening and interview process. Many of these students arrive in the United States with dreams of participating in clubs, sports, arts, music, volunteer work, and other activities (most foreign schools have none). They return to their native land with improved English skills, a sense of independence and self-confidence, more maturity, and a better global understanding. Most importantly, they will have made American relationships that will last forever.

You do not need to have high-school age children in order to participate, and all types of families (even singles) are welcome. To participate in or to request more information on this rewarding intercultural experience, please contact Christie at 832-298-7055 or send an e-mail via Craigslist.

Be a Caring Host Family for an Exchange Student!!

Imagine the excitement of sharing your life with someone who has never experienced your family’s favorite things. You family can teach your exchange student about your favorite American pastimes. You could take your new exchange son or daughter to see a ballgame, to a museum, or to your own family picnic!

In return, you will look at your family’s everyday activities in a new light, through a new pair of eyes. Your exchange son or daughter will make your family activities special, exciting, and more memorable! By hosting an exchange student, you will broaden your entire family’s perspective of the world.

Forte International Exchange Association (FIEA) is a State-Department recognized student exchange program based in Washington, DC. Since 2000, we have brought nearly 2000 international students to the US to study in public schools and experience American life and culture. We are currently seeking families to host students starting in the Spring of 2010. These students are selected for our program based on high academic achievement, strong English abilities, and interest in American culture. Host families are eligible for a modest $50/month tax deduction, but the real rewards are intangible: exposing your family to another culture, sharing your home and family life with a visitor from abroad, and making a personal investment in global cooperation and understanding.

Seeking community outreach volunteers for handicapped travel website (Ann Arbor MI)

Enabled Traveler is the world's only travel show dedicated to the physically and mentally handicapped. We now also offer "custom travel booking services" for the disabled traveler.

Our goal is provide the handicapped and their care providers the most accessible and accommodating travel options, and destinations available, whether for business or pleasure.

We are a small business at this time, so we are asking for volunteers. We need help to spread the word in the community about Enabled Traveler, and the services we provide. We need the various handicapped organizations, physical therapists, charities, businesses, and media, to know that we exist and we're here as the premiere advocate for the disabled in this capacity. We also do motivational speaking on behalf of disabled travel issues, and advocacy. Further, we have a mission to help funnel charitable contributions to NGO's in other countries, that are working to make their infrastructure more accessible for their handicapped populous as well.

Spreading the word can be done online, as you attend the various events, or however you think you may be able to benefit the cause of disabled travel. Please contact us at contactus@enabledtraveler.com, and let us know how you believe you can contribute. We can definitely work together so that we may optimize the time and effort you are willing to put forth.

We thank you in advance, on behalf the disabled travel community. We hope to hear from you, and look forward to working with you.

* We are also looking for volunteers who may be interested in contributing blog content for our website, www.enabledtraveler.com. The topics we cover our health, technology, travel from a disabled perspective of course, and advocacy agencies.

There are over 5,000 homeless in our area. That number is rapidly increasing and as of 1 month ago was
already 1,400 more than 1 year ago.
The chances for shelter are very slim, though there are some services available.
68% percent of these people are homeless due to no income.
There are a number of agencies that reach out to help them, here I'll list 3.
The DELONIS CENTER in AA has a very limited # of beds and a "warming center".
They try to provide your donations directly to those living outdoors. There storage at the center is limited.
There are other services provided as well. 734-662-2829.
ST ALPHONSIS CHURCH on Division street in AA has served breakfast for 20 years. All food served
is donated. Other sorts of donations are gratefully accepted and placed on tables for the people
to pick up while they are there. 734-663-0518.
SOS-This group temporarily houses homeless families and welcomes donations for all needy.
Of course, their capacity is limited as well. Donations are accepted certain days of the week.
734-961-1210
Questions on needed donations, feel free to email.

Discovery Studios, a division of Discovery Communications, Inc., is currently looking for people who would like to participate in a new hour-long documentary style series about hoarding to be aired on broadcast television.

We understand the very personal and sometimes embarrassing nature of this issue. Our series will treat all program participants with respect and compassion. The goal of the series is to promote better understanding of why people hoard, what steps can be taken to deal with the issue, and how a comprehensive exploration of this common problem can lead to positive change for the people involved.

For those willing to participate, we will offer assistance with finding licensed therapists as well as professional organizers who can offer support.

If you or someone in your life is chronically disorganized, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss the project further. Please contact:
