Leading classes in Writing for Wellness for cancer survivors

Writing for Wellness classes show people who have had cancer or other serious physical problems how to write about their journey of recovery. More than just journaling, the designated topic for each class helps the participants focus on a specific aspect of their situation. Classes deal with anger and sorrow, but they also deal with friendships and laughter, hope and giving back to others.

Julie Davey, who is a two-time breast cancer survivor, started the classes to give something back to the community that helped her heal (City of Hope in Los Angeles). Because it has been so helpful, we are expanding the program to other areas of the country.

We’re looking for volunteers to start Writing for Wellness classes. Ideally you would be able to commit to a two-year program of running classes that help people who are recovering from cancer or other medical conditions.

If the two-year commitment is too much, we still would appreciate it if you would join us to hear Julie Davey discuss teaching the classes. Even leading one set of sessions (once a week for five weeks) will help. You can get class information from Dawn Craft at Dawn@IdyllArbor.com or 360-825-7797.

Because scams are such a big part of Internet life, we’d like to make this clear: No purchases are required. No payments are required. There is a book about Writing for Wellness, but you are not required to purchase a copy to lead the classes. Students in the classes are not required to purchase the book either. We hope you will decide to buy a book to help us continue our efforts, but the important thing is to spread the concept of Writing for Wellness.

For more information, please see the website www.WritingForWellness.net or contact Dawn Craft at Dawn@IdyllArbor.com.

Thank you for your help,

Do you believe in hard work and honesty? The principles of individuality and freedom that this country was based on? Then why let the government take your money to redistribute to the cause of the "public interest", such as in war, welfare and social security benefits which most of us don't receive, politicians' pockets, and countless failed government responses to crises and domestic problems? Don't be a slave to the government lies, don't support a government that abuses its power and your individual rights- Get Free!

The Libertarian Party is seeking freedom minded volunteers in your area to work for change in your community and across the nation. Activities will include: scheduling, running, and attending fundraisers and meetup events, setting up and participating in Get Out the Vote operations, sign waves, calling talk radio programs, writing op-eds in local papers, coordinating with the local Libertarian Party, etc. If you are as concerned as we are about our country and our future, and want to do something about it, please reply to this ad. Your efforts will be appreciated.

"Liberals love to say things like, "We're just asking everyone to pay their fair share." But government is not about asking. It is about telling. The difference is fundamental. It is the difference between making love and being raped, between working for a living and being a slave. The Internal Revenue service is not asking anybody to do anything. It confiscates your assets and puts you behind bars if you don't pay." – Thomas Sowell, Forbes, July 1994

Parent/Teen Driving Study (Earn $100) (U-M)

Parents and Teen Drivers needed for study of driving behavior!

What’s this about??
For most teens, being able to drive alone is exciting – but dangerous! Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States! Because the first few months of driving are the riskiest, the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute is placing recording devices in the cars of teenagers to study their driving behavior so that the risk associated with teens’ driving can be reduced.

What are these devices?
Two devices – a DriveCam video recorder and a CarChip data recorder – will be installed into each vehicle. The DriveCam records brief audio and video clips, or “events”, when triggered by erratic vehicle movement (hard braking, fast accelerations, hard turns, etc.). The CarChip records similar information, without audio and video, as well as mileage.

What do I have to do??
If you participate, when the teen in your family gets a Level 2 driver’s license (can drive independently), two devices will be installed in the vehicle the teen will drive. For the next three to six months, the teen will drive normally. Families will be randomly assigned to one of three groups. Depending on the group you are in, you may be asked to view the “events” once a week. You’ll also be asked to fill out surveys when the devices are installed and taken out.

What do I get??
Each family will receive $100 ($50 for the teen and $50 for the participating parent). Participants in all three groups will get to be in DriveCam Inc.’s DriveCam for Families Program either during or following the study. DriveCam’s DriveCam for Families Program provides feedback and coaching on the teens’ driving.

What about privacy and confidentiality??
ALL of the data collected will be kept completely confidential. Parents and teens can leave the study at any time.

For more information or to sign up for this study, please call (734) 764-8213 or e-mail teendriversafety@umich.edu.

Is Shyness or Social Anxiety a problem for you?
Do you consider yourself excessively shy?
Do you have anxiety about social situations? (e.g. meeting new people, public speaking, social gatherings, etc.)

If this sounds like you, you may be suffering from Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD).

Dr. K. Luan Phan (M.D.) at The University of Michigan is conducting a research study on Social Anxiety. In this study, we are testing to see what genes, behavior and brain function can tell us about treatment success in Social anxiety using a medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of Social Anxiety Disorder.

We are seeking men and women between the ages of 18 and 55. Participants will complete a psychiatric interview to determine if you qualify for the study and determine if a diagnosis of social anxiety disorder is present. If eligible, they will undergo two scanning sessions with functional MRI to non-invasively measure brain function.

Participants will perform mental tasks involving viewing emotional faces and images, and performing decision making tasks inside an MRI scanner. X-rays or radioactive materials are not used. Patients who are currently taking psychiatric or neurologic medications (including those used to treat social anxiety) or any other type of medications that would affect the brain will not qualify for the study. Interested volunteers should be right-handed, have no major medical or neurologic illness, and no metal parts in their body. Women should not be pregnant or trying to become pregnant.

This study involves a time commitment of approximately 12.5 hours over a total of 9 visits during a 14 week period.

Volunteers receive $15 per hour plus receive free treatment for Social Anxiety. All information you give is confidential.

Dear Madam/Sir:

I would like to ask for your help with a research study on the relationship between work-related performance and chronic insomnia (study title: “Work-Related Performance in Chronic Insomnia: A Pilot Study”, University of Michigan IRBMED #HUM00016691). Insomnia is a common problem and has been shown to have an impact on work performance. However, evaluating work-related performance in insomnia patients by using subjective or objective measures of work-related performance, for example; a questionnaire or a computer-based test, has not been well studied. To help answer this question, we are asking you to consider participating our study. Participation in this study involves filling out some forms that ask questions about your sleep, mood, quality of life, and work experiences. You will also complete a brief computer-based test to assess work-related skills. We expect that it will take no longer than 60 minutes of your time. After completing the study, you will be compensated $20.

If you are interested, please leave your name, your phone no. and the best time for contact at 734-615-6254 or at wattanac@med.umich.edu
Healthy female and male volunteers needed, age 18 – 35, for research study to evaluate the impact of growth hormone secretion on weight gain. To qualify, you must be healthy, not overweight (Body Mass Index 18-26 kg/m2), inactive (<2 hours/wk of exercise), and on no regular medications (except birth control). All eligible participants will be asked to spend 2 days in the hospital for a series of experiments involving blood draws and a muscle biopsy. Blood and muscle samples will be taken during the hospital stay. $150 will be compensated for completion of the overnight hospital stay. Subjects will receive a free health assessment including measurement of blood lipid profile and free nutrition consultation with a registered dietitian. Metabolism Research Study Part 2 –Volunteers Needed

Findings from these experiments will determine whether participants are eligible to participate in a separate 2 week experiment in the hospital. Although all subjects will not be eligible for the 2 week hospital stay (depending primarily on their growth hormone levels), all volunteers must be willing and able to spend 2 weeks in the hospital without leaving. Participants who are eligible to continue in the study will return to the hospital at least one week after their first hospital stay, and will be required to eat a diet containing much more food than their typical diet. Participants will gain 2-9 pounds during this 2 week study. Immediately after this 2-week hospital visit participants’ diets will be monitored for at least 4 more weeks, until they have returned to their original body weight. During this time participants may be asked to return to the hospital each week for body weight measurements, blood sampling, and consultation with a dietician. Therefore involvement in the study may range from a few days to at least 7 weeks. Participants may be selected to receive an infusion of growth hormone throughout the two-week hospital stay, based on the levels determined during the first 2-day hospital visit. Blood and muscle samples will be taken during each of the two hospital stays. Compensation for completion of the study varies, depending on extent of involvement in the study. Subjects will receive a free health assessment including measurement of blood lipid profile.
Tibetan Prayer Wheels for World Peace

This project is ideal for people interested in deepening a spiritual practice as well as for those simply exploring. Opportunities are available for longer term residential programs.

You can make a difference! Prayer wheels are used in meditation practice to focus the mind and distribute positive energy throughout the world. The preparation of the wheels, which entail attaching strips of mantras end to end and then rolling them into wheels, is itself a meditation and an offering to world peace. Prayer Flags offer protection from natural disasters, promote health, well being and peace, and pacify local spirits.

Nyingma Centers sponsor a variety of Buddhist activities focusing on personal spiritual growth, establishment of Dharma in the West, support of Tibetans in exile, and Buddhist cultural restoration projects in many parts of the world.

We are currently preparing traditional Buddhist Prayer Wheels and Prayer Flags which contain mantras of peace, compassion and protection. These are distributed to religious practitioners and monasteries at the annual World Peace Ceremony in Bodh Gaya, India.

The full-time residential program includes classes, work as meditation, and participation in a cooperative Buddhist community.

Room and board, classes in basic Buddhist topics, and a small stipend are provided.

The Prayer Wheel / Prayer Flag Project is based at:
Nyingma Institute
1815 Highland Pl.
Berkeley, CA 94709

If you would like to volunteer or find out more information about the prayer wheels, the World Peace Ceremony or Nyingma Centers please call or email:
