I am moving to Chicago in January, so I am ending my contract with my co-op early and need to find a replacement. The person who replaces me will be buying housing for four months, January through April. After that, my replacement would have the option of living there indefinitely if they continue to sign contracts, which are based on U of M's semester schedule.
Because I live in a co-op, the money system breaks down differently than in a normal apartment. The $570/month includes all living costs, including room, board, utilities, amenities, taxes, maintenance, etc. Each co-oper owns the house, so there is no one profiting off of the residents, which normally inflates the price of housing. Each co-oper has to do four work hours per week, which keeps the house clean and running. Some of the jobs include cooks, kitchen cleaners, room cleaners, maintenance, and officers (for example, presidents). We elect officers because the house is a democracy at the house level and at the city-wide level. I list cooks and kitchen cleaners first because dinner is served 5-7 days a week and thus the kitchen is cleaned three times per day.
You and another person choose each other as roommates--there are no forced roommate choices. The people at the house are very cool. Since I'm not sure how much I can discuss their coolness online, I would suggest coming by the house for dinner (at 6:30p) or some Thursday/Friday/Saturday night get-together to experience them for yourself. You do not even have to make an appointment--you can just come by and see what's going on.
A large portion of people in the house are students at U of M and Washtenaw, although people like me are not. If you are not a student, you simply have to get non-student approval from the house, for which I have never seen anyone turned down in my fourteen months living in the co-op.
I attached pictures. As you may be able to see, it's a really big blue house. These pictures were taken about thirty minutes before a whole bunch of people took off their clothes to clean the house, but I didn't have any pictures of that. Sorry.
