Interested in Starting a Creative, Philosophical, or Existential Group (Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor)

I'm interested in starting an informal creative or philosophical group, because I've been living in Washtenaw County for 16 months and haven't developed a social circle. In other words, this is a last-ditch effort to find people to hang out with. I'm a web manager by day, and a writer and multimedia artist by night. Here's a brief run-down of works in film, literature, and art that have influenced me the most:

FILM:
Fight Club, The Matrix, Donnie Darko, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, I Heart Huckabees

AUTHORS
Jack Kerouac (and all of the Beats), Hunter S. Thompson, Henry Miller, Friedrich Nietzsche, George Orwell, Albert Camus, Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Chuck Palahniuk

SPECIFIC BOOKS
"Notes From Underground" by Dostoevsky, "Life Against Death" by Norman O. Brown, "The Outsider" by Colin Wilson, "Steppenwolf" by Hesse, "Lord of the Flies" by Golding, "The Great Gatsby" by Fitzgerald, "Heart of Darkness" by Conrad

ARTISTS:
Salvador Dali, Escher

I'm looking for people in their mid to late twenties who are not only unsatisfied with the culture in Michigan, but also with society in general. Please don't contact me if you're looking for textbook philosophical discussions, or if you don't have a sense of humor or nuance.

I'm hoping to meet other creative types who are interested in collaborating on projects. You could be a writer, designer, painter/illustrator, photographer, filmmaker, musician, performer, etc. You should be into existentialism, psychedelia, consciousness, psychology, etc. I'm especially interested in working on a cartoon (think Adult Swim and classics like "Ren & Stimpy") and/or graphic novel (I'm intrigued by the new release "Asterios Polyp"). Short film projects would also be a possibility.

Send me an email if all of this sounds intriguing to you.

Are you tired of being encouraged?

Sick of people saying "Well done".

Have you heard "You can do it!" way too many times?

Have you had it with knowing that every day is a new day for a fresh start?

Well I would like to invite you to our weekly "Anti"-Support group. Here you can be assured that we will make it clear that "You are nothing and will always be nothing" or "Don't even bother, you'll just screw that up too!". Yes, the way to a new, depressed you is with our "Anti"-Support group. Or, if you would rather be more empowered , then you can be a discussion leader and rip apart others self esteem!

Every week we offer coffee ($1 a cup), and cookies (stale) for your enjoyment while we tear each other apart with such conversations as "How to know when you really, truly are a loser" and "Wow, you really are as ugly as you think" and of course that old topic of true poor self esteem "Why yes, that dress does make you look fat". Every other week we hold a special "I never wanted you anyway, you were a mistake" session for parents and children. We also have quarterly "open house" sessions where you can bring extended family and friends for our BBQ/Potluck dinners and join in the fun as we randomly pick one special victim to roast in a marathon of insults.

Non of us are qualified therapist nor do we really even care about you at all, it is mainly for our own, sadistic mentality that we hold these groups. Let's face it, what better way to make yourself feel good than to make someone else feel bad?

We try and be sure to attack everyone equally and leave you feeling depressed and suicidal, if we fail to provide all the insults or negative vibes that you crave then we will work with you until you are a quivering pile of protoplasm in a heap on the floor.

We also hold monthly corporate sessions where you can learn how to take credit for a fellow co-workers hard earned efforts and get a raise or that promotion you deserve! Wake up and smell the coffee, the only way to get ahead in life is to step on people and climb that corporate ladder with confidence!

Respond today and get on the right path to a better you, join us and insult those around you!!!

Harvesting food through hunting and fishing is as integral a part of the natural history of humans as the opposable thumb. Unfortunately, the increase in urban living and decrease in public forest land has threatened to removed the most intimate connection between man and food. Those of us with a green conscience flock to local farmers markets and whole foods grocers because we care about the safety and environmental impact of our food. What is more organic, free range, and sustainable than harvesting your own meat and fish from mother nature's local grocery?

The mission of the Hunting and Fishing Club is to connect experienced and knowledgeable sportsmen with people with little or no experience or exposure to hunting and fishing. We will explore these outdoor activities from a scientific perspective and produce educated and sophisticated outdoors men and women. Topics covered will span from basic firearm and archery lessons to field dressing and butchering many types of animals and fish and sharing our favorite wild game cooking recipes.

Middle-aged white males make up the vast majority of the hunting population in the United States. My goal is to change that, as the Hunting and Fishing Club not only welcomes but encourages interested participants of all races, genders, orientations, and ethnic backgrounds to participate. Personally, I am very excited to share the rich hunting and fishing traditions that my father has instilled in me and look forward to your responses.

Please respond with your city of residence, level of hunting and/or fishing experience, and what experiences you hope to gain from the Hunting and Fishing Club.

Have a wonderful day

Calling All Intellectuals (Bowling Alley)

I am looking to start a philosophical group. The topics being discussed are epistemology (the theory of knowledge) among other things. Beware the closed minded and the skeptics are not welcome! If you feel you have a better understanding of the world/universe and its inhabitants than most people, you are welcome. Our meeting will last no more than an hour and it will take place in colonial lanes. To determine eligibility i have comprised a list of paradoxes (unsolvable dilemmas). Most of them have no apparent solution. so if you would just pick one and tell me your opinion we can go from there.

Barber paradox: An adult male barber shaves all men who do not shave themselves, and no one else. Can he shave himself? (Russell's popularisation of his set theoretic paradox.)
Berry paradox: The phrase "the first number not nameable in under ten words" appears to name it in nine words.
Curry's paradox: "If this sentence is true, the world will end in a week."
Epimenides paradox: A Cretan says: "All Cretans are liars".
Exception paradox: "If there is an exception to every rule, then every rule must have at least one exception; the exception to this one being that it has no exception." "There's always an exception to the rule, except to the exception of the rule — which is, in of itself, an accepted exception of the rule."
Grelling–Nelson paradox: Is the word "heterological", meaning "not applicable to itself," a heterological word? (Another close relative of Russell's paradox.)
Intentionally blank page: Many documents contain pages on which the text "This page is intentionally left blank" is printed, thereby making the page not blank.
Liar paradox: "This sentence is false." This is the canonical self-referential paradox. Also "Is the answer to this question no?" And "I'm lying."
Yablo's paradox: Similar to the liar paradox, but makes the self-reference less apparent by using an infinite number of sentences.
Opposite Day: "It is opposite day today."
Paradox of the Court: A law student agrees to pay his teacher after winning his first case. The teacher then sues the student (who has not yet won a case) for payment.
Petronius's Paradox: "Practice moderation in all things. Including moderation."
Quine's paradox: "Yields a falsehood when appended to its own quotation" yields a falsehood when appended to its own quotation.
Richard's paradox: We appear to be able to use simple English to define a decimal expansion in a way that is self-contradictory.
Socratic paradox: "I know that I know nothing at all."
Bonini's paradox: models or simulations that explain the workings of complex systems are seemingly impossible to construct: As a model of a complex system becomes more complete, it becomes less understandable; for it to be more understandable it must be less complete and therefore less accurate. When the model becomes accurate, it is just as difficult to understand as the real-world processes it represents.
Code-Talker Paradox: how can a language both enable communication and block communication?
Ship of Theseus (a.k.a. George Washington's or Grandfather's old axe): It seems like you can replace any component of a ship, and it will still be the same ship. So you can replace them all, one at a time, and it will still be the same ship. But then you can take all the original pieces, and assemble them into a ship. That, too, is the same ship with which you started.
Sorites paradox: One grain of sand is not a heap. If you don't have a heap, then adding only one grain of sand won't give you a heap. Then no number of grains of sand will make a heap. Similarly, one hair can't make the difference between being bald and not being bald. But then if you remove one hair at a time, you will never become bald. Also similar, one dollar will not make you rich, so if you keep this up, one dollar at a time, you will never become rich, no matter how much you obtain.
Bentley's paradox: In a Newtonian universe, gravitation should pull all matter into a single point.
Faint young Sun paradox: The apparent contradiction between observations of liquid water early in the Earth's history and the astrophysical expectation that the output of the young sun would have been insufficient to melt ice on earth.
Fermi paradox: If there are, as probability would suggest, many other sentient species in the Universe, then where are they? Shouldn't their presence be obvious?
The GZK paradox: High-energy cosmic rays have been observed that seem to violate the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin limit, which is a consequence of special relativity.
Olbers' paradox: Why is the night sky black if there is an infinity of stars?
Thermodynamic paradox: Since the universe is not infinitely old it can not be infinite in extent.
Fitch's paradox: If all truths are knowable, then all truths must in fact be known.
Paradox of free will: If God knew how we will decide when he created us, how can there be free will?
Grandfather paradox: You travel back in time and kill your grandfather before he conceives one of your parents, which precludes your own conception and, therefore, you couldn't go back in time and kill your grandfather.
Hutton's Paradox: If asking oneself "Am I dreaming?" in a dream proves that one is, what does it prove in waking life?
Liberal paradox: "Minimal Liberty" is incompatible with Pareto optimality.
Mere addition paradox: Is a large population barely tolerably living life better than a small happy population?
Moore's paradox: "It's raining, but I don't believe that it is."
Newcomb's paradox: A paradoxical game between two players, one of whom can predict the actions of the other.
Nihilist paradox: If truth does not exist, the statement "truth does not exist" is a truth, thereby proving itself incorrect.
Omnipotence paradox: Can an omnipotent being create a rock too heavy for themself to lift?
Paradox of hedonism: In seeking happiness, one does not find happiness.
Predestination paradox: A man travels back in time to discover the cause of a famous fire. While in the building where the fire started, he accidentally knocks over a kerosene lantern and causes a fire, the same fire that would inspire him, years later, to travel back in time. The ontological paradox is closely tied to this, in which as a result of time travel, information or objects appear to have no beginning.
Problem of evil (Epicurean paradox): The existence of evil seems to be incompatible with the existence of an omnipotent, omniscient, and morally perfect God.
Zeno's paradoxes: "You will never reach point B from point A as you must always get half-way there, and half of the half, and half of that half, and so on..." (This is also a paradox of the infinite)
Allais paradox: A change in a possible outcome that is shared by different alternatives affects people's choices among those alternatives, in contradiction with expected utility theory.
Arrow information paradox: To sell information you need to give it away before the sale
Bertrand paradox: Two players reaching a state of Nash equilibrium both find themselves with no profits.
Demographic-economic paradox: nations or subpopulations with higher GDP per capita are observed to have fewer children, even though a richer population can support more children.
Diamond-water paradox (or paradox of value) Water is more useful than diamonds, yet is a lot cheaper.
Downs-Thomson paradox: Increasing road capacity at the expense of investments in public transport can make overall congestion on the road worse.
Easterlin paradox: For countries with income sufficient to meet basic needs, the reported level of happiness does not correlate with national income per person.
Edgeworth paradox: With capacity constraints, there may not be an equilibrium.
Ellsberg paradox: People exhibit ambiguity aversion (as distinct from risk aversion), in contradiction with expected utility theory.
Gibson's paradox: Why were interest rates and prices correlated?
Giffen paradox: Increasing the price of bread makes poor people eat more of it.
Icarus paradox: Some businesses bring about their own downfall through their own successes.
Jevons paradox: Increases in efficiency lead to even larger increases in demand.
Leontief paradox: Some countries export labor-intensive commodities and import capital-intensive commodities, in contradiction with Heckscher-Ohlin theory.
Lucas paradox: Capital is not flowing from developed countries to developing countries despite the fact that developing countries have lower levels of capital per worker, and therefore higher returns to capital.
Mandeville's paradox: Actions which may be qualified as vicious with regard to individuals may have benefits for society as a whole.
Metzler paradox: The imposition of a tariff on imports may reduce the relative internal price of that good.
Paradox of thrift: If everyone saves more money during times of recession, then aggregate demand will fall and will in turn lower total savings in the population.
Productivity paradox (also known as Solow computer paradox): Worker productivity may go down, despite technological improvements.
St. Petersburg paradox: People will only offer a modest fee for a reward of infinite expected value.
Absence paradox: No one is ever "here".
Bracketing paradox: Is a "nuclear physicist" a physicist who had an accident, or is it just someone who studied nuclear physics?
Buttered cat paradox: Humorous example of a paradox from contradicting folk tales.
Impossible object: A type of optical illusion.
Logical fallacy: A misconception resulting from incorrect reasoning in argumentation.
Moral paradox: A situation in which moral imperatives clash without clear resolution.
Moravec's paradox: Logical thought is hard for humans and easy for computers, but picking a screw from a box of screws is an unsolved problem.
Paradox gun: A gun that has characteristics of both (smoothbore) shotguns and rifles.
Paradoxical laughter: Inappropriate laughter, often recognized as such by the laughing person.
Proof that 0.999... equals 1
- “A Change in Altitude” by Anita Shreve

- Anita Shreve is a regular on best seller lists. Yet, this latest work has generated mixed reviews. Shreve includes her usual themes – personal relationships, loss, grief, and how life can change in an instant. Critics of the work site a lack of detail that should hold a reader’s interest. Fans say she exercised restraint in her prose to give way to the reader’s imagination. Join the Book Bunch discussion and form your own opinion!

- Monday, December 14, 2009, 1:00pm
- At the Milan Public Library, 151 Wabash Street, Milan, Michigan

Looking for social, volunteer, and networking opportunities? (Ypsilanti Jaycees)

The Ypsilanti Area Jaycees are a young peoples organization focused on providing a variety of opportunities to its members (Young adults aged 21-40). People join the group for a variety of reasons, and we believe we can truly offer something to almost anyone.

What we can offer:

* Social opportunities - We try to have fun at whatever we do. We have around 80 projects/socials a year so we really do offer something for everyone. Many people develop a great network of friends through the Jaycees. Some recent socials we've had include: 'Name that Tune Night', 'Ice Skating', & 'Game Board Explosion'. We recently had a Masquerade Party & Costumed Pub Crawl for Halloween.

* Volunteer opportunities - Many people want to get involved in helping make a difference in the community, but tracking down your own opportunities to help can be daunting. We provide our members with many opportunities to get out in the community and make a difference. We're raising money to buy the Fire Department a Thermal Imager. We recently helped to create a life-sized Chutes and Ladders game to raise money for the S.O.S Community Center. We have upcoming projects collecting, & delivering food for a Thanksgiving meal to needy families, and also am helping to run a Senior Dinner for older members of our community.

* Leadership and Skill Development - The Jaycees help to train tomorrow's leaders by giving them opportunities to learn skills while getting involved in and running projects for our group and community. We also put on trainings to develop professional and personal skills. We've done trainings on Financial Management, Time Management, & Public Speaking and also more fun things like Chess Training, Ballroom Dancing, & Tai Chi. Coming up we have a rock climbing training and an international training to learn more about countries and cultures called "Around the World in 80 minutes" Coming soon we're going to be learning how to curl, so get your broom ready.

* Business Opportunities - Becoming a Jaycee provides you with many business opportunities. You can network with our membership of ~110 members. Members also can have their business placed in our Member Business Directory & put an ad in our monthly newsletter each month. Many members find this advertising to be worth their cost of membership alone.

* Community Events * - The Jaycees are also known for running many of Ypsilanti's Community Events. We'll be running the 4th of July and Heritage Fest Parades, Run the poker and blackjack tent at Elvisfest, are bringing the Circus to town in August, and have our Beautiful Baby and Precious Pet booths at Heritage Fest.

Want to meet new people, learn new skills, volunteer, or expand your personal network? Explore our website at ypsilantijaycees.com or contact our Membership Vice President Tim at membershipvp@ypsilantijaycees.com if you have questions or want more information to help you decide if the Jaycees are a good organization for you.

Our monthly meetings are at 7pm on the 3rd Thursday of the Month (Dec 18 is the next meeting) at the Senior Center at 1015 N Congress St, Ypsilanti, 48197. Visitors and prospective members are always welcome. If you feel like finding out more and meeting us come join us at our next meeting.
